About the Journal

Luxury has played a profound role throughout history shaping society and the economy. It is now at a critical crossroads as it expands into more sectors and increases its influence. One can say that luxury has bifurcated into a craft practice on a smaller scale and a powerful global industry. As an industry it faces criticism as its scope and scale widens. Has it lost touch with the features that typically define luxury: rarity, high quality and hand crafting?

The serious pursuit of luxury demands an acknowledgement that luxury is multisectoral and situated within a complex global network. Luxury can take the form of an idea, material object, product or experience. It is a concept explored in a variety of disciplines each with its own focus, methods and objectives. Professionals and academics apply their own meanings, interpretations and strategies in defining and redefining luxury.

Surprisingly little has been written about the production of luxury in all its guises, nor the impact of the supply chain on the environment. The study of luxury tends to celebrate craftsmanship and the creation of superior products within a European tradition. This is open to discussion and debate. Point of origin and place of manufacture play a significant part in the luxury debate. This journal will define pertinent business models, their parameters and the evolution of luxury from a craft practice to an industrial one reaching new markets.

The accumulation of new knowledge generated from the journal will, we hope, have direct impact on how luxury is defined and will contribute to the understanding of a wide range of issues both academic and industry related. We welcome contributions from scholars from all disciplines and from practitioners from all segments of luxury including but not limited to fashion, jewellery, hospitality, architecture, automotive, technology, and aviation.
