Chris Berry is Professor of Political Theory, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law, Business and Social Sciences and Co-director of the Adam Smith Research Foundation at the University of Glasgow. His authoritative work The Idea of Luxury: A Conceptual and Historical Analysis was published by Cambridge University Press in 1994. Its stature is marked not only by the frequency by which it is cited but also by its appearance in a Chinese translation in 2005, as well as more popular manifestations in global media.
His conceptual analysis of luxury has been used in an empirical investigation of a necessity-luxury scale in evaluating goods (see S. Kemp in Journal of Economic Psychology [1998]).
Other work on the theme has appeared in French in Le Luxe: Essais sur la Fabrique de l’Ostentation. Paris: Editions de l’Institut Francais de la Mode (2005) and in Spanish in Distincion Social y Moda. Ediciones Universidad de Navarra (2007). Chris Berry is also a leading authority on 18th Century thought, history and political ideas and in addition to his book on Luxury he has written five other volumes plus over 50 academic articles/book chapters.
